Is Cancun expensive? Cancun is expensive compared with many other destinations in Mexico, but the price level varies enormously depending on where you stay and where you eat. The Hotel Zone can in many areas have prices approaching those in the USA and Europe. Downtown Cancun is a completely different world. Therefore there really isn't one single Cancun price level.
Hotel Zone vs Downtown
This is the most important difference to understand.

Here you pay tourist prices for:

- restaurants

- coffee
- beach clubs
- taxis
Downtown
Here you will find:
- cheaper hotels
- local restaurants
- taco places
- supermarkets
- generally lower prices
If you're staying without All Inclusive, some restaurant visits Downtown can significantly reduce your food budget. What does restaurant food cost? This is a section that should be updated continuously with actual receipts from Cancun.no. We would divide the price levels like this:

Rather than publishing numbers we haven't verified, Cancun.no will record actual prices when we visit the area. This provides much greater value than generic “from 10 to 50 dollars” estimates.
Beer and cocktails
Price differences are also large here. A local beer Downtown can cost a fraction of a cocktail at a popular spot in the Hotel Zone. Especially premium bars and resorts can have prices that surprise you if you expect “Mexico prices.”
Supermarket
If you're staying in an apartment or a hotel with a fridge, shopping at a supermarket can be a good way to reduce costs. Typical items we will track prices for:
- water
- soft drinks
- beer
- fruit
- snacks
- breakfast
- diapers
- sunscreen
For families with children, the latter is especially useful.
Hotels
Hotel prices vary enormously throughout the year. They are influenced, among other things, by:
- the Christmas holidays
- New Year
- winter
- Spring Break
- Easter
- hurricane season/low season
It is therefore far more useful to compare prices by month than to state one “normal price.”
Taxi and transport
Transport can become a surprisingly large part of the budget if you use taxis several times a day. From the airport you must use authorized transport. Regular local taxis do not have access to pick up passengers at the airport terminals. (Cancun Airport) For families, pre-booked private transfer can therefore be both easier and more predictable.
Excursions
Some of the biggest holiday expenses are often activities such as:
- Chichén Itzá
- Xcaret
- Xel-Há
- catamaran tours
- snorkeling
- diving
- cenotes
On a family trip, several such activities together can cost more than the restaurant budget. All Inclusive – cheaper or more expensive? It entirely depends on how you vacation. If you:
- eat all meals at the resort
- drink a fair amount
- spend many days at the hotel
then All Inclusive can offer good value. If, however, you spend a lot of time on excursions and restaurant visits, it can be poor value.
