Cancun with kids – is it a good destination? Cancun can be a very good destination for families with children. The long sandy beaches, warm temperatures and the huge selection of family hotels make the area easy to vacation in, while there are also enough activities and excursions so the holiday doesn’t have to be only about pool and beach. But there is one important thing to be aware of: How well Cancun works with children depends a lot on where you stay. The differences between hotels and beaches are large. A fantastic hotel for a couple can be impractical with a two-year-old, while a huge resort with a water park can be a dream for a ten-year-old. Where should you stay with children? For families we would first consider three areas:
Hotel Zone
The most flexible choice. Here you get beach, restaurants, shopping and activities relatively easily accessible. It suits especially well if you want to do more than stay on the resort.
Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres
North of Cancun there are several large modern family resorts. This is very suitable if the main goals are:
- beach
- pool
- All Inclusive
- Kids Club
- activities
- a quieter resort holiday
Downtown Cancun
This is rarely our first choice for a classic family holiday because you don’t stay directly on the beach. In return it can be an affordable option if Cancun is primarily going to be a base for excursions.

This is an area where you should be cautious about general advice. Cancun’s long east-facing beaches can have both big waves and strong currents. That doesn’t mean they can’t be used with children, but swimming conditions can vary from day to day. The more sheltered beaches in the northern part of the Hotel Zone may be better when small children want to swim. Among the beaches we would look into are:
- Playa Langosta
- Playa Tortugas
- Playa Caracol
- certain beaches around Punta Cancún
Playa Delfines is fantastic to see and visit, but the sea can be rougher than on the more sheltered beaches. Always follow the flags and instructions from lifeguards.

If you’re traveling with a baby or children under about five years old, we would prioritize practical things higher than a huge activity offering. Look for a hotel with:
- short distance from room to pool and restaurant
- elevator
- good shade
- crib
- refrigerator
- possible separate sleeping area
- children’s pool
- easy access to food throughout the day
- a beach with conditions that work for small children
A hotel that looks spectacular on Instagram can be surprisingly inconvenient if you have to walk ten minutes each way every time someone needs to sleep.
Cancun with school-age children
From around ages 6–12, many more activities become available. That’s when Cancun becomes especially interesting. Activities can include:
- snorkeling
- boat trips
- Isla Mujeres
- cenotes
- water parks
- zipline
- Xcaret
- Xel-Há
- Mayan ruins
- water sports
- wildlife
Here we would try to balance sightseeing and rest days. A good rhythm can be: Activity day → beach day → activity day → beach day.
Cancun with teenagers
Cancun also works very well with teenagers, especially if the hotel has a good range of activities. Look for:
- Teen Club
- sports
- water activities
- good pools
- gym
- snorkeling
- Wi‑Fi
- restaurants that feel a bit more grown-up
Activities like cenotes, zipline and snorkeling can often become bigger highlights than traditional children’s activities.
All Inclusive with children
Cancun is perhaps one of the destinations where All Inclusive makes the most sense with children. This is primarily due to how practical it is. Children will typically want: breakfast → juice → ice cream → lunch → snacks → more drinks → dinner. With All Inclusive you don’t have to decide on every single purchase. But calculate how many excursions you plan to take. If the family will be off the resort four out of seven days, you’re paying for a lot of food you never eat.

Isla Mujeres
A simple and exciting day trip. Beach, boat trip and the chance to explore the island make this a nice family day.
Cenotes
For slightly older children this can become one of the holiday’s highlights.
Xcaret
A large full-day experience with nature, culture and activities.
Xel‑Há
Especially interesting for families who like water and snorkeling.
Museo Maya de Cancún
A good alternative when you want a calmer activity.
El Rey
An easy way to see Mayan ruins without spending the whole day on transport. Is Chichén Itzá worth it with children? It depends on the age. Chichén Itzá is fantastic, but the trip from Cancun is long. With a two-year-old such a day can be demanding. With a 9–12-year-old who finds history and adventure exciting, it can instead be a great experience. Also consider how many stops the trip includes.
Food with kids
Mexican food doesn’t have to be spicy. Tacos, quesadillas, rice, chicken and guacamole often work well for children. At large resorts you will usually also find international options. Our advice is still to let the children try some local food. A fresh taco can be a much bigger hit than you think.
Sun and heat
The sun in Mexico is significantly stronger than in Norway. For children it is especially important with:
- high sun protection factor
- UV clothing
- cap or sun hat
- frequent drinks
- breaks in the shade
Midday sun can be intense, especially spring and summer.
Mosquitoes
The amount of mosquitoes varies by season and area. Bring or buy insect repellent, especially if you are going to cenotes, jungle areas or will be out after dusk. How long should a family stay in Cancun? If you’re coming all the way from Norway, we would normally recommend at least 9–10 nights if the budget and travel plans allow it. 10–14 days allow room for both:
- beach days
- jet lag
- excursions
- lazy days
- some bad weather
For a family we often find two weeks works better than one week.
Our recommendation
Cancun works best with children when you don’t try to do everything. Choose a good hotel, plan in a few big experiences and leave plenty of space for spontaneous days by the pool and on the beach. It is often precisely those days the children remember best.
