Cancun can be fantastic with children – if you choose the right hotel. The differences between family hotels are bigger than you might expect. Some are perfect for families with small children, while others are much better for families with 10–15-year-olds who want activities from morning to night. Here are the hotels we think should be on the list when you plan the family holiday.
Hyatt Ziva Cancun – our choice for the combination of location and family
Hyatt Ziva is one of the first hotels we would look into for a family visiting Cancun for the first time. The resort is located at Punta Cancún and combines a very central location with All Inclusive and family-friendly facilities. That means you don’t necessarily have to choose between a resort holiday and the opportunity to experience Cancun outside the hotel. Best for: Families who want a bit of everything.
Moon Palace The Grand – for children who will never be bored
If the range of activities is the most important thing, Moon Palace The Grand is hard to overlook. This is a large resort experience with an extensive program of activities. Here you should, however, be aware that you are choosing the resort as the destination, not a central base in the Hotel Zone. It can be fantastic for one family and completely wrong for another. Best for: Active families and longer resort stays.
Dreams Playa Mujeres – for a family holiday in quieter surroundings
Playa Mujeres north of Cancun is interesting for families who don’t need to stay in the middle of the Hotel Zone. Dreams Playa Mujeres combines a family profile with large resort facilities in a quieter area. Best for: Families planning to spend a lot of time at the resort.
Finest Playa Mujeres
Another family option in Playa Mujeres. This should be considered by families who want a more exclusive resort and where the parents’ holiday experience is at least as important as the children’s.
Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach
The big advantage here is the combination of resort and location at Punta Cancún. That makes the hotel interesting for families who don’t want to sit on an isolated resort for the whole holiday.
Club Med Cancún
Club Med has long been strongly focused on activities and families. The location at the very south of the Hotel Zone differs from many competitors and makes the hotel interesting for active families. What is most important with young children? With a 2–5-year-old we would prioritize differently than with teenagers.
Young children
Pay special attention to:
- calm beach
- shallow children’s pool
- shade
- short distance between room, pool and restaurant
- high chair
- cot
- flexible meals
- possibility of separate sleeping areas
A huge water park is not necessarily important.
Children aged about 6–12
Now the following become more interesting:
- water slides
- activities
- Kids Club
- snorkeling
- sports
- entertainment
- multiple pools
Teenagers
A common mistake is to book a "family hotel" that is actually built for small children. With teenagers we would look into:
- Teen Club
- sports
- water sports
- fitness options
- activities
- Wi‑Fi
- larger pools
- the ability to move around the resort
Hotel Zone or Playa Mujeres with children? This is perhaps the most important choice.
Hotel Zone
Choose this if you want to:
- explore Cancun
- eat outside the hotel
- shop
- be near more activities
- combine resort and city
Playa Mujeres/Costa Mujeres
Choose this if you want:
- peace and quiet
- a resort holiday
- lots of time at the hotel
- large family facilities
Do you have to choose All Inclusive with children? No. But it can be very practical. When the children suddenly want ice cream, drinks or food, you don’t have to think about the bill every time. On the other hand: If you plan four full-day excursions in a week, you will in practice pay for many hotel meals you never eat.

Do not choose a family hotel based on the water slides alone. The beach, room layout and the hotel’s size influence everyday life just as much. For each family hotel review on Cancun.no we will therefore assess:

- Children 6–12

Hyatt Ziva, Moon Palace The Grand and Dreams Playa Mujeres are also among the hotels that appear in recent 2026 comparisons of family resorts, but with quite different strengths: central location, large activity offerings and a calmer resort experience.

Choose a base before you choose a hotel.
Start with the kind of holiday you want: beach-first resort time, family-friendly logistics, restaurants and evenings, or frequent outings. Then compare the Hotel Zone, accommodation style and transfer needs as one decision.
